Dealing with unwanted telephone sales calls
Sales calls from companies that you have not had any dealings with is called cold calling or direct marketing. You can register your preference not to get such calls using the National Directory Database (NDD). However, you may still get calls asking you to take part in a survey.
The National Directory Database is a list of all telephone numbers contained in public phone books or available through directory enquiries.
How to stop sales calls to your landline
If you have a landline (fixed-line) phone and you do not want direct marketing companies to call you, you should contact the service provider you rent the landline from. If you do not object to getting calls from companies wanting to sell you goods or services, you do not need to do anything.
When you contact your provider to tell them you do not want to get direct marketing calls, they will make sure that this is recorded in the ‘do not call’ direct marketing register of the NDD. This should be done within 5 working days. It can take up to 28 days for this information to filter through to marketing companies who make cold calls.
Ex-directory phone numbers are automatically included in the ‘do not call’ direct marketing register.
The register only applies to calls that are made in Ireland.
If companies are still cold calling you
If you get a sales call more than 28 days after your details have been recorded in the ’do not call’ direct marketing register of the NDD, or after you have told the company in question not to contact you again, you can make a complaint to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC). It can investigate and prosecute the company, if necessary.
If you are, or have recently been, a customer of the company who is calling you or you have indicated that you wish to get these calls, these rules do not apply. A reputable company should, however, respect your wishes not to be called.
How to stop sales calls to your mobile phone
Cold calls to mobile phones are prohibited unless you have consented to getting direct marketing.
There is no charge to be recorded in the ‘do not call’ direct marketing register of the National Directory Database.
How to apply
If you do not want direct marketing companies to call you, you should contact the service provider you rent the landline from and let them know that you do not wish to get unsolicited marketing calls. They will then make sure that this is recorded in the ‘do not call’ direct marketing register of the NDD.
